There’s still plenty of time to make the most of your Extras cover in 2020, especially as many of us can now safely visit essential health services to keep on top of our own health and well-being.
We’ve already seen members take advantage of their policy offerings in recent months. Up to 40% more preventative and diagnostic dental claims were made in in June, compared to claims made in March, and remedial massage claims have increased by 30%.
Log in to Online Member Services and click ‘Extras Usage’ to view your usage and remaining limits. An easy to follow, quick reference break-down of your dental, optical and therapies remaining limits is also on your dashboard as shown below.

Extras limits on your policy reset on 1 January each year (except Optical & Hearing Aids), so you still have until 31 December to claim for a range of services. Here’s a reminder of what’s covered:
Looking after your mental health, especially during times of uncertainty and heightened stress
The last six months in Australia have been challenging for our community, with our catastrophic summer bushfires followed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
These events have impacted us all differently, although dealing with the current uncertainties and unique circumstances can have an adverse effect on our mental health.
All our Extras covers provide benefits towards consultations with psychologists and counsellors, when not covered by Medicare. It is important that you feel comfortable with your practitioner, so with no preferred providers, we will pay a benefit for services provided by your chosen psychologist or counsellor, as long as they are accredited with an Australian organisation in their relevant field, such as the APA or PACFA. We also cover consultations provided by phone or video.
Recognising the importance of looking after your mental health, we increased our benefits across all levels of cover from 1 April, so now you receive more back each year on these services.
On Total Extras, each policy member has a stand-alone total limit of $900 to claim on mental health services per year, and the sub-limit for Essential Extras has increased to $700^. A benefit of $100 is paid per consultation.
On Starter Extras, consultations receive a benefit of $100 per visit, up to a combined annual limit of $400^.
(Note: these benefits are separate from any Medicare benefits for mental health services, and Medicare and health fund benefits cannot be claimed on the same consultation).
Your optical limit
Optical limits run over a fixed 2-year period. If you joined Doctors’ Health Fund in an odd year, so 2019, 2017, 2015 and so on, your optical limit will be expiring on 31 December. Your limit will reset on 1 January, and your benefits will not be carried over to the new year.
Optical purchases can be made in store or online, as long as they are prescription and are purchased from an Australian company with an ABN. We cover 100% of the cost of your frames, lenses and/or contact lenses, up to your fixed 2-year limit. Don’t forget about the discounts available for Doctors’ Health Fund members at a selection of major optical retailers.
For members who joined us this year, or in another even year; i.e. 2018, 2016 and so on, you will retain your limit until 31 December 2021, with the fixed 2-year period determined by your join year. If you are unsure of your join year, this information can be easily checked in Online Member Services.
Therapies to help with movement
With clinics reopening, take advantage of therapies including physiotherapy, occupational therapy or podiatry, and remedial massage services, which can all be claimed under our three Extras covers. Don’t forget, members on Total Extras now receive more back for their first consultation on a range of these therapies. Log in to Online Member Services to find which therapies this higher benefit applies to.
Benefits for telehealth consultations provided by phone or video can also be claimed if you’re in isolation or prefer to access services within the comfort of your home.
Don’t forget check-ups!
It is important not to delay check-ups, as this can have an adverse effect on your health. You still have time to book in your dental check-up for the year, or receive important preventative screening tests including mammograms, mole mapping, ThinPrep tests, bone density tests and audiology check-ups.
