Doctors’ Health Fund grows to over 25,000 memberships

Doctors’ Health Fund recently celebrated surpassing 25,000 memberships and 55,000 people covered. Reaching this milestone is a testament to our proud and unique history and the important role our health fund plays for the Australian medical community.

Key areas of growth

We continue to see strong growth in younger age groups, defying wider industry trends of declining participation of young Australians in private health insurance. In fact, 57% of our growth to date this financial year has been members aged under 35 years, showing quality health cover is important and of value to young doctors and medical students.

Members choosing to be covered by Top Cover Gold, which uniquely pays benefits up to the AMA List of Services and Fees, also continues to grow. This demonstrates that a health insurance product which provides high-level medical coverage, continues to resonate amongst our community.

A focus on community

It’s a jump from our humble beginnings as the health fund created by the NSW Branch Council of the AMA in 1977, to ensure doctors and their colleague patients were adequately compensated for medical fees. Now we’re a health fund that not only supports doctors, but also the community around them.

CEO Peter Aroney reflects on our growth and how the fund has evolved, saying:

‘As we grow we don’t lose sight of our core values; to support the unique needs of our members and offer high quality products, with a focus on freedom of choice and personalised service.

The last year has challenged all Australians in some way, but it has been an especially challenging period for doctors and all those involved in front-line healthcare. The pandemic is not over, and we only need to turn to what is occurring overseas to see how well placed we are with our dual private-public health system. Covid-19 caused us to consider how we best respond to these unprecedented events; for our members, our staff and all our healthcare providers. Through the secure backing of Avant Mutual, we were able to provide premium reductions for all members and introduce the coverage of tele-health to expand access for important health services. We now operate in a hybrid working environment where we work both from home and in our office. We continue to work hard to maintain our service standards for all our members.'

Looking ahead

We see ourselves as an innovative fund that invests in technology and people that will continue delivering the best experience for our members. Through technology such as our claiming app and Online Member Services, which now has over 17,000 members and partners registered with an account, we are always looking for ways to make it easier for you to be a member of Doctors’ Health Fund.

Above all, it is through your feedback that we can continue to improve and provide high quality products and service. Each year we have a member satisfaction survey, and we also encourage you to complete our post-contact surveys. It is through this feedback that we can remain focused on protecting our growing membership in the times needed most.
